Good Girl Faith and A Tight Little Skirt

Can you believe that were already working on our holiday line? There's so much to prepare and it all has to be done by the end of March. There's four themes and they each have about 15 dresses each. I've been helping with the fabric choices for each dress and I must say, I wish I was a little girl because the dresses are super cute. As well as working with the beginning of the process, I've been working with the end, in retail. I'm also interning at Nordstrom in the juniors department and I've been learning a lot about visuals and how they affect the store. A front set-up will attract the customer and is led by a hero piece and because a retailer doesn't want their customer to just buy one thing, they put other layering pieces out to complete an outfit. #HeadToToe

The most current Nordstrom set up highlighting their hero piece, distressed denim, and adding layering pieces next to it so a customer can complete an outfit.

This is a  sketch I made of the top of a cross rack of clothes that shows how each garment is placed in a certian spot for a reason. My mentor showed me this and this affected what color and fabric she's going to make her line.

Blog 13: Lesson 2 Reflection

1. I'm most proud of all of the information I included and the way I flowed all of the info I had.

2. I would give myself an P+ because I made time, I cited my research, and felt that I met all of the requirements on the rubric. I think that I did more and it ended up being a really good presentation.

3.  I felt that all the preparation I had worked for me. Because of all the research I did and the experience from mentorship, I knew what I was talking about and I felt confident about what I knew.

4. In the beginning, I thought I was doing fine and then I started getting ahead of myself and forgot to mention some key points that I had practiced saying.

5. I think my second answer is going to be store ambiance and set up.

Blog 11: Holiday Project Update

  1. Over break, I wasn't able to go to mentorship due to the holidays. But, I was working on sketches for the Nordstrom B.P program I'm in. These sketches will be submitted to a corperate office and have the chance to be produced in Nordstrom stores.
  2. The most important thing I learned is how to put together my own line and understand cohesion. This gave me the opportunity to use the skills I learned in my independent component college classes, AMM 210.01 Apparel Design Analysis and AMM 112.01 Fashion Illustration and from seeing my mentors do it every month.
  3. Since my question is about fashion merchandising, I want to ask my mentors at MyMichelle and our supervisor as Nordstrom B.P.

I Could Show You Incredible Things

There are so many things that I would never have learned without my mentorship and research this year. There's so many technical terms I learned, i.e. CADS, techpacks, flats. It feels nice knowing what everybody's talking about when they're having meeting at MyMichelle. This month has been very busy for me senior project wise. I had two finals in my fashion classes at Cal Poly, which were absolutely draining, but totally worth it. They gave me insight on so many small details that mostly go unnoticed, but help sell the clothes in the end. At my mentorship, we've been working on December pre-line, which will be in stores in June. This line revolved around electric pink and royal blue and had peasant dresses and crop top dresses. We even had a Christmas party in our department with tons of food and beautiful decorations (done by me). The small six months I've been there have introduced to amazing people and have taught me so much. #HeresTo2015

A sneak peak at December preline.

The cutting page that goes in a techpack

An assignment for my AMM 112 fashion illustration class, I had to draw a pair of jeans. When you look at jeans, you don't realize how many reinforcement stitches and rivets they have. Fact is, they have A LOT.

Let's All Gather 'Round

This month we've had even more garments to make than we normally make due to a new project for Target. Yes, Target. The one and only, amazingly, magical Target. I know you may be thinking, "What is MyMichelle designing for Target for? Target has their own brand.", but you have been fooled. Target's smaller brands such as Xhilaration and Mossimo don't actually make all of their clothes. They buy most off of smaller companies like ours. So we had to do more dresses on top of our normal line, which means more cut tickets for me to fill out. We also took a moment this month to give thanks for all of our help throughout the department and had a Thanksgiving fiesta. #yumyum

Some current Holiday dresses from Target. If ours get picked, they would be in stores between April or May.

This is an example of the pattern cut tickets I fill out. I have to put information about the dress, include a swatch of the fabric, and specify where it's going to be at. This info helps the cutter do their job.

Sadly, I still get lost sometimes, but I can't help it if they keep sending me to new departments.

The decorations for our Thanksgivning Fiesta. We set up a long table and had tons of Mexican food. #amaz-beans

Blog 10: EQ

1. I reviewed the rule of three for writing an EQ.

2.  a. What is the most important factor in a healthy weight loss?
    • Follows the rule of three.
    •  This question allows for in-depth research, gives a specific adjective wording (healthy), and can argue about weight loss.
     b. What is most important to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation?
    • Follows the rule of three.
    • This question has very specific wording which can help with in-depth research, and it is arguable.
     c. What is the most important in creating a hairstyle that best satisfies a customer?
    • Does not follow the rule of three.
    • This question can have many variables that can mess with the possible answers, making it hard to come up with the best answer. It also doesn't really say what its asking for.
     d. How can an anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?
    •  Does not follow the rule of three.
    • This question is very general and doesn't allow you to take a stance, because a possible answer either is or isn't the best way to treat chronic pain.

3. What is the most important aspect of making, buying, and setting up clothing to make it appeal to the customer?
